The City of Griffin Stormwater Department is a forward thinking agency that is constantly endeavoring to improve the quality of life in the City of Griffin.


The City of Griffin Stormwater Utility’s Mission:
To provide a comprehensive program for watershed management which includes: seeking out alternative funding mechanisms to enhance Griffin’s stormwater management system; establishing programs to address infrastructure problems; cost effective design and construction of the necessary improvements; providing leadership through the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that will enhance water quality throughout the region; and improving the overall quality of life for our citizens.


Responsibilities of the Stormwater Department
Maintain the drainage infrastructure. This includes cleaning stormdrain pipes and ditches. Repairing curbs & gutters, catch basins and installing new drainage systems.

Operates street sweepers and a vacuum truck to keep drains clear of debris. Uses various construction equipment for small drainage projects such as driveway pipe replacements, catch basin repairs and stream bank repairs.

Oversees capital improvement projects such as regional detention pond construction and large stormsewer replacements.

Inspects new construction sites for compliance with erosion control and city development standards, as well as monitoring for illegial dumping and litter.

Oversees the planting and removal of trees within the City's right of way.

The City of Griffin Stormwater Department received the Public Education Award Program of the Year from the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. (November 2009) Award

The City of Griffin received the Program Award for Excellence in Floodplain Management. The award was presented by the Georgia Association of Floodplain Management recognizing the city for the best Floodplain Management Program of the year. (March 2009) Award

The City of Griffin, along with fellow members of the McIntosh Trail Regional Development Center, received the Georgia Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations for it’s Bacterial Source Tracking on Potato Creek. (2006) Award

The American Public Works Association has presented an Award of Recognition to the City of Griffin for being selected as a Clean Water Partner by the EPA. (February 2003) Award

The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded the City of Griffin a Clean Water Partner for the 21st Century. (February 2003) Award

NADO has awarded The City of Griffin with Georgia’s First Stormwater Utility Innovation Award for its use of Stormwater GIS mapping, bacteria tracking and drainage modeling. (December 2002) Award

Outstanding Stormwater Management Program of the Year Award from the Georgia Section of American Water Resources Association and Georgia Water & Pollution Control Association. (July 2001) Award

Community Watershed Leadership Award. The EPA Region 4 recognized the City of Griffin for their efforts in furthering the protection and restoration of the southeast's water resources in the year 2001. (August 2001).
